Prior to the start of extraction of gravel from the site an archaeological survey was carried out. This survey found evidence of occupation within the site from the:
• Bronze Age
• Iron Age
• Romans Times
• Medieval Times
• Recent History
The Bronze age is only represented by a small selection of pottery, which could possibly be a burial urn.

The Iron age evidence was a bit more substantial, with the foundations of a round house and an associated field system being identified.
The Romans represented themselves with the foundations of a villa or farmstead, which was sufficiently high status to have an under floor heating system - Some hypercaust tiles were found. There was also evidence of a Roman field system associated with the villa.
